A woofer is like a car tire, the more you use it, the more it will wear out, and eventually (like any mechanical part), it will need to be replaced. At that point you have the option to buy an entirely new driver or have your existing driver reconed. We usually do not recommend driver recones, and here is why:
In a repair context, once you add up the cost of the recone kit and labor to do the actual recone, it usually makes more sense to buy a new woofer. Furthermore, brand new woofers often come with a warranty, so you have more of a guarantee. Furthermore, the workmanship and quality of aftermarket parts from repair shops can be variable, with many using subpar components that are liable to break after not too long. With that said, if there is a local recone shop you trust to do a good job, it can be a good option to have your woofer reconed, especially if you buy a new woofer and would like a spare/backup.
