DV12 vs Attuned12 vs AT212

When it comes to high-output BASSBOSS Tops, three of our most popular options are the Attuned12, the AT12, and the DV12. This document will explain the major differences between each so you can make an informed decision

Key Strengths of each box

  • Low Frequency Output
    • When it comes to low frequency output, the DV12 is the clear winner, as it was designed to emulate having a subwoofer when no subwoofer is present. It produces low frequency output down to (and below) 40Hz, matching the extension of many mass market boxes.
  • Expandability
    • When it comes to expandability, the DV12 features the most coherent summation due to the distance between each driver when arrayed. However, a single AT212 is louder than a pair of DV12's, so the AT212 (and Attuned12) provide the ability to expand to higher SPLs
  • Rigging and Mounting Flexibility:
    • The Attuned12 is the clear winner when it comes to rigging and mounting flexibility in fixed installations. It features 14x internally braced M10 flypoints and can easily mount to an upcoming U-bracket for easily-adjustable horizontal or vertical deployments. It's relatively small size and weight combined with its low profile aesthetic make it especially effective for fixed installations. The AT212 can also be flown with its included 4x M10 flypoints. While the DV12 features 8x M10 flypoints as well, we usually do not recommend flying the DV12 due to its tight vertical pattern, which can be suboptimal when flown far above a crowd except in scenarios where ceilings are low or the front-to-back distance of the crowd is small.
  • Output/SPL:
    • The AT212, with its two 12" woofers, is the clear winner when it comes to SPL, and is able to keep up with a massive amount of BASSBOSS subs. With that said, the Attuned12 gets without about 3dB of the output of the AT212 in a smaller and lighter box, so when it comes to output per pound, the Attuned12 is no slouch.
  • Sound Quality:
    • All boxes are designed to have studio-quality sound, and sonic differences are minimal and really come down to personal preference. With that said, the Attuned12 features modern technology not found in the DV12 and AT212 that provide what many have found to be as smooth. The Attuned12 also features the lowest HF crossover of the three at 800Hz helping keep vocals intelligible (many of our customers prefer a lower crossover point between the LF and HF).
  • Aesthetics:
    • The Attuned12 is the only box that comes in white, and features a clean, scalloped design with a continuous grille that hides the internals of the cabinet and has no screws. For scenarios like houses of worship and high-end corporate events where aesthetics are key, we recommend the Attuned12.

The DV12:

The DV12 is designed to be a speaker on a stick, for mobile DJs, corporate events, rental houses that need a speaker with wide coverage great for big ballrooms and outdoor events. It is a 12" two-way featuring a 12" woofer with a 4" voice coil and a 3" voice coil compression driver mounted to a 120 x 20 degree line array horn. The box and woofer are designed to produce output down to 40Hz, matching the low frequency performance of many mass-market subwoofers. In higher-numbered presets, the low frequency burden is removed from the DV12, allowing it to get louder when used as a dedicated top when paired with subs. The DV12 can also array vertically in an inverted-array configuration, providing true +6dB summation when used in pairs due to the wavelength/driver matching.
If the following apply to you, the Attuned12 may be the right speaker for your application:

  • You want a speaker that can emulate having a subwoofer when you don't want to bring one
  • You work in wide ballrooms where a wide horizontal and tight vertical pattern are beneficial
  • You won't have trouble lifting a 63lb box
  • You plan on placing your speaker on a pole or tripod

The Attuned12:

The newest member of our AT (Attuned Top) series is the Attuned12. It is a single 12" two-way loudspeaker that features a 12" woofer with a 3.5" voice coil, and a 3" voice coil compression driver mounted to a rotatable 90 x 60 degree horn. The Attuned12 uses a lower crossover point of 800Hz to improve the efficiency and intelligibility of vocal projection. Unlike the DV12, we always recommend using the Attuned12 with subwoofers, which allowed us to make a box that is lighter than the DV12 while also providing more mid and high output. In terms of SPL, it sits between the DV12 and AT212, allowing it to produce a massive amount of sound for its size. Equally at home as a mobile production box or in fixed installations, it features 14x internally braced M10 flypoints and can easily mount to a U-bracket for easily-adjustable horizontal or vertical deployments. The Attuned12 can array horizontally to provide more +3dB summation and wider coverage in the horizontal plane when needed.

If the following apply to you, the Attuned12 may be the right speaker for your application:

  • You plan on usually bringing and using subwoofers
  • You are looking for a box that is easy for a single person to lift and hold (The Attuned12 is the lightest and most ergonomic of the three boxes mentioned here)
  • You want a loudspeaker that comes in white (out of all of our powered tops, the Attuned12 is the only that comes in white)
  • You need a loudspeaker for fixed installations with flexible mounting and rigging options

The AT212:

The AT212 is the loudest (and largest) top of the three speakers mentioned here. It is a dual 12" two-way loudspeaker that features 2x 12" woofers with 3.5" voice coils, and a 3" voice coil compression driver mounted to a rotatable 80 x 60 degree horn. Like the Attuned12, we recommend using the AT212 with subwoofers, as it is designed to be a dedicated mid-high box. The AT212 is physically taller than the DV12 and Attuned12, meaning it can sit on one of our subwoofers like a VS21, Vertical SSP218 or ZV28, or Kraken to get the tweeter near an optimal hight over a listening plane. The AT212 is tuned to be a longer-throw box due to its SPL capacity, and thus can cover a large listening area. Like the Attuned12, the AT212 can array horizontally, providing +3dB summation and wider coverage in the horizontal plane

If the following apply to you, the AT212 may be the right speaker for your application:

  • You plan on usually bringing subwoofers
  • You are looking for the most output possible
  • You want a fast, easy setup with a VS21, SSP218, Makara, ZV28, or Kraken
  • You work out of a larger vehicle and and do not have issues lifting a 90lb box
